1. What is In vitro fertilization?

In vitro fertilization is a process by which the female oocyte and the male sperm are gathered together in order to fertilize the oocyte. This procedure is accomplished in laboratory conditions (outside the human body). After that the human embryos are transfered into the woman’s uterus. This is a very popular method and it is called “test tube baby”.

2. What is the difference between ICSI and IVF?

- ICSI method (Intracytoplasmic sperm injection) consists in direct injecting of one spermatozoon (with specified parameters) into the oocyte.
- Conventional IVF consists in placing the eggs in contact with a specific concentration of sperm in culture medium and incubating them until fertilization occurs.
ICSI is a method which is used more often in cases of male infertility, when the woman’s sexual functions are fully preserved.

3. What is Intrauterine insemination (IUI)?

IUI is a procedure that involves placing a number of washed sperm directly into the woman’s uterus through a thin catheter. This treatment does not involve manipulation of the woman’s egg, fertilization occurs in natural conditions (in vivo).
